Description

Ground cherries (Physalis pruinosa) are not well known despite their long history in North America. The popular heirloom variety, Aunt Molly’s, has been cultivated by Pennsylvania Germans since the 1800s. They are easy to grow in the garden with minimal pest and disease problems.

Their small, yellow-orange fruits have a sweet-tart flavor similar to pineapple with a faint background flavor of tomato. Ground cherries are part of the same plant family, Solanaceae, as tomatoes.

To grow ground cherries from seed, start them indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost, in a warm spot (70-80°F) and with consistent moisture. Sow seeds about 1/4 inch deep in seed-starting mix, keeping the soil moist but not soggy. Once seedlings are established, acclimate them to outdoor conditions gradually, then transplant them outdoors after the last frost.

Ground cherry seeds can be slow to germinate, so be patient and keep the soil moist. Aim for a soil pH of 6.5-7.0. Ground cherries are generally disease-resistant and don’t have many major pests.

Start Seeds Indoors:

Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost to allow for a longer growing season and potential for earlier fruiting. Use a good quality seed-starting mix or potting mix. Sow seeds about 1/4 inch deep in individual seed-starting cells or small pots. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, and provide bottom heat (70-80°F) to encourage germination. Provide plenty of sunlight or use a grow light.

Acclimatize Seedlings:

Once seedlings are strong, gradually acclimate them to outdoor conditions by starting with short periods outside on a warm day in the shade, then increasing exposure to sun, wind, and cooler temperatures over a week or two.

Transplant Outdoors:

Transplant seedlings outdoors after the last expected frost and when the soil is warm enough. Space plants 2-3 feet apart and 4-6 feet apart in rows. Provide support for the plants, as they are sprawling and will benefit from a trellis or stakes.

Growing and Harvesting:

Ground cherries need full sun and regular watering, similar to tomatoes. Use mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Ground cherries are ripe when the husks turn brown and drop from the plant.
