Description
To grow radishes, choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil, ensuring it’s not heavy or compacted. Sow seeds thinly, about 1/2 inch deep and 1-2 inches apart, thinning seedlings to 3 inches apart after they sprout. Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy, and harvest when the roots reach about 1 inch in diameter.
Choose the right location:
Radishes need at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. They prefer loose, well-drained soil that’s rich in organic matter. Avoid heavy clay soils. Radishes are cool-season crops and do well in temperatures between 40 and 70°F (4-21°C).
Prepare the soil:
Dig and loosen the soil to a depth of at least six inches, and even deeper for long varieties of radishes. Incorporate compost or other organic matter to improve soil fertility and structure. Add a balanced fertilizer at planting time, but avoid over-fertilizing, as too much nitrogen can lead to more leaves than roots.
Plant the seeds:
Sow seeds thinly about 1/2 inch deep and 1-2 inches apart in rows that are 3-6 inches apart. Thin seedlings to 3 inches apart when they are a few weeks old.
Water and care:
Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water regularly, especially during dry spells, to prevent the plants from bolting (going to seed) and becoming tough. A layer of mulch around the plants can help to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Harvest:
Harvest radishes when the roots reach about 1 inch in diameter, usually 4-5 weeks after sowing. It’s better to harvest radishes a bit early than to wait too long, as they can become tough and bitter if they get too big.
