Description
The Winged Genie of Assyria is a piece of ancient art that has fascinated people for centuries. This 9th-century BC stone base relief was created by the Assyrians, a powerful civilisation that once dominated ancient Mesopotamia. They were supernatural beings that symbolized protection and fertility for the Assyrian empire.
One-of-a-kind, unique ceramic tiles. I handmade these tiles from high-fire clay, hand-cut and designed. Air dried and fired, glazed and fired again.
The tiles average approximately 5-1/2″ x 3-1/2″ x 1/4″ thick (9cm x 14cm x 7mm). The backs are unglazed and ready to install in a tiling project or you can request a hook attached to the back to hang at checkout.
**These tiles are hand-cut, handmade and not perfect copies, all vary in millimetres in thickness and size.**
There were many different types of these winged demi-gods; some were guardians of sacred places, some were messengers of the gods, some were healers or teachers, and some were warriors or hunters. They all had one thing in common: they represented the power and wisdom of the divine.
The origin of these winged genii can be traced back to the ancient Sumerian concept of apkallu, or antediluvian sages. These were wise and powerful beings that were created by the god Enki before the great flood, and taught humanity various arts and sciences. Some of them survived the flood and became invisible guardians of human civilisation.
